How I Increased My YouTube Subscriber Rate by 97% in One Month

At the beginning of November, I started an experiment with YouTube's Invideo Programming feature. By turning the interactive watermark into a call to action that appeared throughout the entirety of all my videos (it reads "FREE Social Media Tutorials"), I wanted to see if it had a positive impact on the rate that I attracted new subscribers. After just 7 days, my net gain of new subscribers had jumped by over 100 per cent, from 10 in the week before Invideo Programming was added to 23 the week after.

It's now been a full two months since the experiment started, and now I have the data to compare the whole of November to the whole of December. And the results are still really promising!

In November 2012, I gained 40 subscribers and lost 4, giving me a net gain of 36. Not bad, not bad.

Now here's December, and wow! I gained 73 new subscribers, lost just two, giving me a net gain of 71 new subscribers - that's an extra 35 people and a 97 per cent increase over November!

As I mentioned last time around, these figures can be influenced by several factors, including subscribers gained on new videos during the test period, as well as those gained on old videos in the same length of time. However, this rise in subscribers is considerably more than I have seen since I started posting videos on YouTube in the spring of 2012.

I'll keep you posted on how things develop into 2013!

Important Changes to FourSquare for Marketers in 2013

foursquare-changes-update-2013.png

FourSquare has announced two big changes to its app for 2013, which will come into effect from January 28th in the new year.

Full Names Always Displayed

To make searching for friends in FourSquare easier, everyone's full name will be displayed on the app. In previous versions, sometimes a full name showed, and sometimes just an initial and surname. If you want to change the name that is displayed, you can change it at www.foursquare.com/settings.

Businesses Can See More Of Their Recent Customers

This is the change most important for marketers. A business on Foursquare will be able to see more of their recent customers. At present, businesses can only see the customers who have checked in within the prior three hours. However, not everyone has time to check these and note their most loyal customers (which can help in targeting future offers to them), so now you'll be able to see lots more recent check-ins.

Do you use Foursquare for business? Will these changes benefit you in your social media marketing? Comment below to let me know!

How to Send An Automatic Happy New Year Message on Facebook

If you're close enough to your customers, Facebook's automatic Happy New Year message service could be a sneaky marketing opportunity, as I show you in the following video tutorial.

Why Updates to Facebook App 'Nearby' Tab Are So Important For Businesses

Facebook has rolled out changes to the 'Nearby' tab on its mobile app, giving local businesses an even better chance of being discouvered by users on the move. There are over 600 million Facebook mobile users, so this change is particularly significant for bricks and mortar establishments.

Until now, the Nearby tab showed only where their Facebook friends had checked in. Now, in addition to that, users can see which businesses are nearby, ranked primarly by the recommendations of friends according to star ratings, check-ins, and Likes. If none of a users' friends have left their mark, then the ranking data will be pulled from non-friends who have engaged with that place.

Facebook mobile users can also now search for places by category - such as restaurants, coffee, nightlife, outdoors, arts, hotels, and shopping. Once they've found a suitable business, users can Like, chec-in, call, or get directions straight from the Nearby tab of the app. They'll also be able to share recommendations with their friends and the wider Facebook community - but only if they have legitimately checked in.

This update to the Facebook app for iPhone and Android makes it more important than ever for businesses to make sure they have a Facebook Page, and that the information on that page - address, store hours, contact details, etc. are all accurate. In addition, getting users to engage with your business on the app now has greater meaning, so encourage customers to check-in, like, and engage to help boost your rankings within the app.
